tanzpflanzen

a project to plant the seeds of contemporary dance in Bosnia and Herzegovina
activities

Although international theatre festivals taking place in Sarajevo occasionally feature contemporary dance performances, BiH remains largely isolated from international dance movements and developments. This can definitely be seen as a weak point in the Bosnian cultural scene, as international festivals and exchanges are frequent in the field of music, theatre, and visual arts such as painting, video and photography but are lacking in the field of dance. Ballet classes are part of the curriculum of the music school and dance schools in Sarajevo offer courses in ballroom dances, Latin American dances and traditional dances but contemporary dance is largely unknown.

However, the contemporary dance scene in neighbouring countries is developing and growing, and a network is being established to connect the dance scenes of the Balkan countries in order to facilitate the exchange of information, ideas and projects, dialogue and communication, and to encourage collaboration in the Balkan region, helping as well in establishing connections with other regions. Thus far, a partner in BiH has been missing and BiH has been left out of the project.

The Tanzpflanzen project aims to start bridging these gaps by making contemporary dance available to interested people in BiH and by creating a connection between the international dance scene and BiH. Our activities will enable BiH to be included in the network of contemporary dance in the Balkans and constitute a starting point for future exchanges and co-operations, thus contributing to the widening of the Bosnian cultural and artistic scene and ending its isolation in the field of dance.
